1. Beehive What?

Hornets. This was the name of our 6-a-side footie team that played in Sheffield Uni intramural leagues between 1996 and 1999, culminating in victory in the prestigious "Thursday, 10am" league. When the team was formed, we were living in Beehive Road, and Gaz, stuck for a name for the team when doing the entry form, came up with the Beehive Hornets. Can you see what he's done there? For more info see the full and frank Potted History of the Beehive Hornets. Or if you're really desperate have a look at the original Hornets website, which has been recovered and renovated.

2. So why do a game about them?

Pick from "why not?", "because we've nothing better to do" and "the world deserved it".

3. OK, how does it work then?

Well, without giving too much away the abilities of the various players in each team are pitted against each other in order to see who scores goals, using complex mathematical equations. Either that or MAGIC.

4. Sounds great! How do I sign-up to play?

You just have to go to the signup page, enter your details and pick a team of six players. Any of the players can be used in any position, but the total team cost (player costs are in brackets after their names) should be under 10 of your English pounds. Obviously you can only use each player once. When all details are entered hit the "Submit team" button. All being well you will be told that your team has been registered, otherwise you will be informed what went wrong. After your team has been registered you will be informed by email when your first game will be, so make sure that the email address you give is a valid one. We won't sell it to any spam-merchants, unless they offer us more than a fiver anyway.

5. Why do the players have "costs"? And what do they represent?

The players have costs to shake up the different teams a bit. Without costs everyone would probably pick a similar team containing the "best" players. With player costs and a team cost limit it is not possible to pick all of the most expensive players, so compromises must be made. The costs are in pounds sterling and represent roughly how good the player is. It's amazing how much footballing ability you can buy for 1.90ukp. Yep, you're right, not a lot. Internally each player has values for several attributes that determine how effective they at different aspects of the game, and the cost broadly reflects these. But, there are players who are over-priced, and also bargains to be had!

6. How do I check my results?

To check your results you need to login. Enter the email address and password that you used when registering your team and hit the "Logon" button. This will take you to your team page, from where you can check fixtures, results and the league table, read match reports and make transfers.

7. Can I change my team later?

Sure can. You can make upto 4 transfers in a season, by selecting the "Make transfers" option on your team page. Select the player that has been letting the side down then press the "Make transfer" button. On the next screen select the new player from the list and hit "Make transfer" again. If you can afford this player and don't already have them in your team then the transfer will go through, otherwise you will be informed of the problem.

8. I was robbed! My team should have trounced...

Hey, I don't make the rules! OK, actually I do. But rest assured the minimum amount of effort has gone into checking that the game works reasonably well. Seriously, if you _really_ think something went a bit wrong / weird then let us know. This is only the first version of the game so any (positive) feedback will be appreciated.

9. What's the prize for winning?

Prize? You want a prize too, as well as a fantastic free game? There really is no pleasing some people. Won't honour and the respect of your peers be enough?

10. Why did the other team have more attacks than me?

The amount of attacks each team has is decided by the overall team strength, which is calculated as acombination of the various attributes of each of the players. A "good" team will be given more attacks than a "bad" team.

11. The game reports - bit repetitive innit?

Yeah, yeah, well you try thinking up loads of (mildly) humorous footballing phrases. We've started with a database of about 150 different phrases in 10 categories. We'll try to add to this as we go along, but if you have any witty footie catchphrases we'd love to hear them. Anything so as we don't have to do any work.

12. I've forgotten my password...

Muppet. Tell us your email or team name or manager name and cross our palm with silver and we'll see what we can do.

13. What's all this (a) and (d) business in the match reports?

Right. Basically if a player has (a) after their name (EG Rob(a)) then it means that they are on the attacking side. Now see if you can guess what (d) stands for... (defending side, obviously). I know it looks a bit rubbish but the reports can get really confusing when both teams have the same player. Then you get stuff like "Rob rounds a static Rob...". "Rob(a) rounds a static Rob(d)" makes it a bit easier to see what's going on. I think. I'm still not convinced of the idea (and it was my idea in the first place!) and if everyone hates it I'll bin it. OK?

14. What does the "Shuffle your team" link do?

The "Shuffle your team" link takes you to a page where you can change which position the players in your team play in. This is different from a transfer because you aren't getting a new player, but just shuffling your team around. You can do this as many times as you like.
